Would the Yamaha FJR be a smart choice for a novice, as myself?

I have never had a motorcycle and I am researching different bikes. Also I’m concerned about the clutchless feature of the FJR. Would this be a problem for a rookie rider? Can someone advise? Thanks I appreciate the help.

The clutchless feature would actually make riding easier (though I’ve never ridden one of these) since it would give you that much less to think about. Still, I wouldn’t recommend it. Ultimately you want to be able to ride ANY bike, so why not learn on one with a clutch (like 99.99% of them)? You can always switch to the clutchless FJR.

Okay, now for the bad news… The FJR is a bad@ss bike, and newbies should stay away from 145bhp monsters like this. Honestly, if you’re really new, I’d suggest a used general purpose bike (Nighthawk, etc.) until you’re used to riding. If you’re leaning toward the FJR crowd of crotchrockets, then buy a used 600cc Katana or other good, but not psycho bike and get used to riding. Just plan on selling it and upgrading in a couple of years after you’ve had some time in the saddle.

I started out on an old Honda with… I don’t know… maybe 50bhp? And it was astonishing to me how much power it felt like I had. I upgraded after about three years, but still, I don’t see the need for 145bhp in a motorcycle.
